Here is a new version of the BMUG Boston settings file to connect via modem or TCP/IP, to be used with the FirstClass Client application, version 2.7.2. This file includes the new BMUG telephone number as of October 1, 1995 (617-275-3062), a new logon screen, and many new icons to enliven your desktop.
Please follow these instructions:
1. Make sure you know the User ID, password, and modem setting that you are now using to call BMUG. (Note that your User ID is not necessarily the same as your name.)
2. If you do not know your ID or password, get them from your old settings file. You can’t see the password from the file itself, but if you have Microsoft Word you can open the settings file and view the password. Or use the FC Digger application, available in FirstClass Files on BMUG Boston.
3. Do not trash your old settings file until you are sure the new one is working correctly.
4. Open the new BMUG Boston settings file, click Setup, and on the next screen type your User ID and password. Click on Save.
5. Click on Setup to go to the modem selection screen. Make sure the correct modem type is selected from the popup list.
6. Check that the BMUG telephone number is entered correctly. You may need to delete the 617 area code, depending on where you are calling from. If you have to change the phone number, be sure to click Save.
(Note that local Nynex calling rules are changing, and people within the 617 area may soon need to add that prefix even if they did not have to use it previously. However, if your service allows you free calls to Braintree, you do not need to enter the area code.)
7. Your new settings file should be ready to use. When you next call BMUG, you will see a new look on your desktop!
